Carl Sagan a Stoner?

Posted on January 18th, 2008 by Lev

Not that I in anyway condone the use of marijuana in any manner, but can you believe Sagan, a pot head!

This account was written in 1969 for publication in Marihuana Reconsidered (1971). Sagan was in his mid-thirties at that time. He continued to use cannabis for the rest of his life.

News Years

Posted on January 6th, 2008 by Lev

P1080338Moshe took his first big road trip to Seattle, where we celebrated News Years with Ben and Tammy. A great time was had by all, although not without our share of fussing during the drive.  We didn’t exactly party the night away, as a matter of fact, none of us even made it up past midnight!  But it was a blast nonetheless.  Next year Moshe should be ready to paint the town red.  Take a look at the rest of the pictures.

Hanukkah and Family Visits

Posted on December 13th, 2007 by Lev

IMG_6080.JPG We’ve had a very busy month. First Byron and Shirley came in over Thanksgiving, then Mark and Dina for a long weekend, and Alla, Scott, and Ayla came in town for a week. All the visits were a lot of fun and it was great to see everyone. Now we are happy to have Moshe to ourselves, for a little while at least. Last week we hosted a Hannukah party at our place. It was a great time, with lots of little kids running around, yummy food, and good friends. Thanks to everyone for coming! Head over the photos area to see some pictures.

Moshe’s first laugh

Posted on December 13th, 2007 by Lev

Moshe was in a good mood last night. I was getting ready to take him for a little stroll after dinner and Marti told him as much as she was dressing him. As she said “do you want to go for walk with papa”, he broke out laughing. Luckily we had the camera close by!

Bike Rally

Posted on November 21st, 2007 by Lev

While I have mostly focused on family matters thus far, I hope to use this blog for the occasional post about other goings on in our lives. Marti are both avid bicyclists. Aside from a fabulous recreational activity, commuting by bike brings you closer to your community, is healthy for both the individual and community, is cheaper, and, in many cases, faster than driving. I could go on. Last month in the Portland, there were a spate of tragic bike/car crashes, with two of them resulting in deaths. You can read the details on Jonathan Maus’s blog, Bike Portland. These tragedies were exacerbated by the reaction of the police. In at least the two fatal collisions, the cars were clearly at fault as they had failed to yield to the bicyclists who were legally in the bike lane. The police failed to fault the drivers, or even issue citations. Their message was that is was somehow the bicyclists fault, that the drivers couldn’t be expected to see the bikes. Excuse me - since when is that a valid excuse for something?

The Portland bike community has held several rallies, there have been press conferences, and Sam Adams is leading a crusade at the city level to make some immediate changes to improve the safety of the roads. There was a rally last week, and the aunt of one of the victims gave this touching and meaningful speach.

Moshe smiling!

Posted on November 13th, 2007 by Lev

Moshe smiling!, originally uploaded by Lev T..

Marti was amazingly able to capture one of Moshe’s first smiles on camera. He started threatening to smile a couple days, and we think it looks like he pulled it off today. A friend told me, just when you’re ready to leave him out on the porch, they’ll throw a smile at you around this point …

what did I get myself into

CIMG3115.JPG I thought starting a family blog would be all fun and games, but then I realized that certain expectations get set, grandparents get anxious, well, you can imagine the rest (see my last post date).

For the sake of being brief, it’s 10:30 and Moshe could start crying at any moment, I posted some pictures online. You can see them directly from Flickr, as I’m still working on a few bugs with the Flickr/ Blog integration. They are only visible to my Flickr contacts, which you all should be. If not, drop me an email.  I couldn’t resist posting a teaser.

Nursing …

Posted on October 24th, 2007 by Lev

CIMG3088.JPG … is tough! Seems a woman first gets beat up by labor and birth, and then kicked while she’s down with nursing, at least in some cases. Marti’s hanging in there really well, and is learning more each day, but I know it’s been hurting a bit. But at least nursing brought about our first outing. We packed Moshe up in the carrier and went over to Zanana, a lactation consultant. The session really helped, and Mosh was so knocked out afterwards, that we were able to go out for Sushi, and he didn’t even wake up. We followed that up today with another outing to visit the midwives. He could stand to gain some weight, but is doing alright. And aside from the nursing problems, Marti is in great shape.
